How Small Businesses can weather the slow summer season

Most owners treat the doldrums as weather. Something that happens to them. The slowdown isn’t the problem. It strips out the spring cash that hides structural weakness and shows you what the business actually is.

Five things I told them:

  1. Know your floor, not your balance. The cash in your account in June isn’t profit. It’s leftover spring. Know the minimum you have to clear every month to cover debt, payroll, your own pay, and taxes.
  2. Pop the hood while the engine is idling. The slow weeks are the only time you can find the process that has been quietly bleeding margin all year.
  3. Summer exposes your single points of failure. If revenue drops the week one person is at the beach, that is structural, not a vacation problem.
  4. AI runway is free right now. Testing a tool costs almost nothing and the slow season is free runway. Automate one or two workflows and walk into Q4 with a permanently lower cost per job.
  5. Q4 is won in August. The owners who panic in October are the ones who coasted in July.
