Jay Aldebert breaks down the Taco Bell cyclospora outbreak tied to Taylor Farms lettuce and what it really means for small and independent restaurants. At International Services Inc, we dig into the true cost impact operators are facing, why California and Mexico supply issues are squeezing independent restaurants harder than chains, and why Wall Street is already picking winners and losers before the investigation even wraps up.

How Small Businesses can weather the slow summer season https://jayaldebert.singlemaltstudios.com/press/how-small-businesses-can-weather-the-slow-summer-season/ Fri, 12 Jun 2026 19:58:29 +0000 http://jayaldebert.singlemaltstudios.com/?post_type=press&p=896 Read More... from How Small Businesses can weather the slow summer season

Most owners treat the doldrums as weather. Something that happens to them. The slowdown isn’t the problem. It strips out the spring cash that hides structural weakness and shows you what the business actually is.

Five things I told them:

  1. Know your floor, not your balance. The cash in your account in June isn’t profit. It’s leftover spring. Know the minimum you have to clear every month to cover debt, payroll, your own pay, and taxes.
  2. Pop the hood while the engine is idling. The slow weeks are the only time you can find the process that has been quietly bleeding margin all year.
  3. Summer exposes your single points of failure. If revenue drops the week one person is at the beach, that is structural, not a vacation problem.
  4. AI runway is free right now. Testing a tool costs almost nothing and the slow season is free runway. Automate one or two workflows and walk into Q4 with a permanently lower cost per job.
  5. Q4 is won in August. The owners who panic in October are the ones who coasted in July.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL / ACCESS Newswire / April 10, 2026 / Profit by Design Consulting founder Jay Aldebert has surpassed $1 billion in consulting revenue generated through diagnostic work with small and mid-sized businesses across the trades, construction, manufacturing, and trucking sectors. That milestone reflects more than two decades of hands-on operator consulting and a pattern Aldebert says he can now identify almost immediately: pricing failure.

Over twenty-five years and more than 86,000 business diagnoses, Aldebert has found that the most damaging version of pricing failure is not the obvious kind. It is not a business priced below its competitors. It is a business priced at or above market that has quietly drifted away from profitability as input costs including labor, materials, fuel, and insurance have risen incrementally over time while prices have stayed flat…

The exit is the finish line. For most small business owners, it is the event the entire enterprise is supposed to be building toward, the moment when decades of risk and reinvestment convert into a transferable asset. Jay Aldebert has spent much of his career delivering an uncomfortable finding: most owners are not building toward that finish line. They are building parallel to it….

Before hiring. Before expanding. Before renegotiating a lease or launching a new service line or taking on debt to buy equipment. Before any of it, there is a number that must be known. Most business owners have never calculated it.

Jay Aldebert calls it Minimum Mandatory Profit. It is the floor, the precise amount a business must produce each year before a single strategic move makes rational sense. Not a goal. Not a target. A threshold….

The advisory infrastructure of American business, the consultants, the software platforms, the financial media, the strategic frameworks taught in business schools and distributed through major publications, was largely built around a specific type of company. Venture-backed. Scalable. Asset-light. Managed by founders with MBAs and measured by metrics that mean nothing to a plumbing contractor trying to make payroll.

Jay Aldebert has never worked with that kind of company. His entire career has been spent with the businesses that install the pipes, pour the concrete, move the freight, and manufacture the components that the celebrated part of the economy depends on entirely but rarely acknowledges.

These are companies averaging three to nine million dollars in annual revenue…
